Adverbs and Prepositions
 
Adverbs are words or groups of words which tell time, place, frequency or manner. Adverbs describe verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs..
I went to Bethlehem yesterday. I performed Hajj last year.
She came here. They went downtown.
Prepositions are usually followed by objects in prepositional phrases. They can also be used to indicate time, place, frequency, duration, reason, manner, or to show contrast.
I climbed the mountain at noon.I ate in the restaurant.
We went to the market. They walked into the mosque.
 
*Do not use adverbs as objects of prepositions.
          Incorrect:           Correct:
They went to somewhere. They went somewhere.
I was working at last night.I was working last night.
Sami works in downtown.Sami works downtown.
Ahmad came to home on yesterday. Ahmad came home yesterday.
 
Be careful with words such as home, downtown, today, next/last week, etc. which are sometimes used as adverbs and sometimes used as nouns.
